7,000 families to have central heating systems installed
The government is providing over £25 million to the Central Heating Fund. This scheme will allow thousands of families across the UK to both warm their homes and reduce their heating bills. The money will be allocated by councils to the needy so that they can install a furnace or heating unit in their home.
There are over 20 councils that will be given this money from the government and it is expected that over 7000 homes will be able to benefit. The amount of money being provided to each council will vary as well, as some of the districts in northern England (where the weather is colder) are being provided more money. For example, Northumberland County Council will have over £6.5m to help pay for the installation of a furnace. Cumbria will have as much as £1.14m and they plan on installing almost 300 systems.
The aim of the Central Heating Fund is to help the vulnerable that are living in fuel poverty and that are not connected to the energy grid. Many of these people use non-traditional sources of fuel to heat their homes, which can be both expensive and dangerous to them. There are stores each year of older people that have died in their homes as they have frozen to death, and this scheme can help prevent that and other health issues from occurring.
When a central heating system is installed, a homeowner can save as much as £1,000 a year on their annual energy bills. This is when compared to other sources of fuel, such as wood or coal. This money can then be used for paying other living expenses that the family has. Or the household can save this money as they try to break out of poverty.
The Central Heating Fund also involves the partnership of the major energy providers in the UK. Companies such as Northern Gas Networks, npower and National Grid Gas will participate in the scheme. They will help the local councils install heating systems and offer the customers other assistance on their bills as they start to connect to the grid.
This scheme is a partnership of dozens of councils, the central government, and energy providers. All of these groups will be able to help the family with the new heating system and offer different types of support. The Central Heating Fund is a good example of different organisations coming together to aid vulnerable households across England.
Another part of the scheme is the ongoing support being provided. The 20 councils that are being provided the money by the government have agreed to offer their residents other aid on their heating bills. They will be working with the energy providers to offer everything from payment plans to education to the families on a low income. So there is ongoing support given to help these people cut utility bills.
