Derby City Mission services and schemes

The faith based charity Derby City Mission provides support for the vulnerable and less fortunate. A number of resources are run by the church and its volunteers, and they work to feed the hungry and homeless as well as provide shelter. The mission even provides free debt advice to people in the city from the Jubilee Project.

The homeless and substance misusers can benefit from the Recovery Project. Volunteers will bring people on the streets fresh clothing, blanket, hot meal, drinks, and more. They will recommend shelters and temporary housing as well, and the aim is to fill the gaps in services from the government and other charity groups.

While Derby City Mission will serve meals and help them on the streets, they do try to find those that want to change and live independent. For those that are identified, this is done by signposting the person to a council scheme, or maybe a church that will care for them. Hundreds of people have been helped by the Recovery Project, and many have found employment and moved on to their own homes.

Free debt advice is provided by the Jubilee Project. This is for people in rent arrears, that may owe cash to a predatory lender, or that need help with budgeting or maximizing their income. The service is provided at clinics, and no appointment is even needed. People can just walk in.

There are locations across the city, such as at St. Peter’s church, and the Derby City Mission can provide more information on the dates and hours of them. The advisors helps with negotiating affordable repayments, prioritising debts, as well as maximising government benefits and checking income levels. If someone is under exception pressure, signposting is provided for other support.

Some of the locations of the debt clinics have been at St Augustine’s Church, Upperdale Rd, DE23 8BP as well as St Peter’s Church. Evangelical Church in Osmaston may also have information on them. Call 01332 460347 for information.

Free Christmas presents are for children from families in poverty or that are on a low income. The Derby City Mission will help people that are referred to it from social workers, the Derby Council, Jubilee clinics and other charities.

This is a wide ranging service, and it involves a number of churches, food banks, and volunteers in Derbyshire as well as Derby. Many groups and people collect toys from businesses and shops, including Intu shopping centre as well as Derby City Council Markets. These items are then provided to children as Christmas presents.

Night Shelter is open during the winter months in Derby. Volunteers will serve free meals or pass out a parcel of food. This of course is in addition to safe accommodations that people are given to sleep in and stay warm at.

The accommodations are for the vulnerable that need a place to go for the night or the homeless. The space is limited, and only about 30 people can use the City Mission Night Shelter scheme, but those who do get a free meal, warm drink, and more.

The Derby City Mission may also be able to provide other help, such as a voucher to a food bank or advice on gaining independence. The address is 25 Charnwood Street, and the main number is 01332 460346.
