Free food banks Devon
Several independent free foodbanks in Devon as well as organisations that are part of the Trussell Trust provide help to individuals and families. Many people have had a reduction in their benefits or incomes and struggle with buying food for their families, and the centres provide assistance while the person addresses the hardship. The organisations also partner with agencies such as CAB or the Devon District council, which can also provide help from the welfare assistance scheme.
The centres depend on donations and volunteers from the local districts for funds. As an example, the council in Exeter provides grants to a few, local independent food banks, as they have had about a 40% increase in usage. The council in Mid-Devon also provides vouchers or pre-paid cards to buy food to families to help them in a crisis.
The locations will provide three to five days worth of food in an emergency, and is can be non-perishable items, vegetables, soups, milk, tea, and much more. The Devon centres will require that a client have a voucher or referral, and they can get them from a care professional, as a doctor, social worker, or their local CAB office.
Also, donate to the food bank if you can as they always need more items. There are several places that this can occur at, including drop off locations in Exeter such as Sainsbury’s Alphington or Co-operative Queen Street. There are also donation centres in other districts, and your local food bank can provide a referral to these.
