Free legal aid from Hammersmith and Lulham Law Centre

A team of lawyers, volunteers and case workers from Hammersmith and Lulham Law Centre can help vulnerable clients with their legal needs. For those that are struggling and low income, the charity may offer them support. It can come in the form of free representation or just advice. They focus on addressing housing and homelessness, assist with applications to benefits or rent deposit schemes, can help immigrants, and other vulnerable individuals.

While the priority of the charity is on assisting families in the Fulham and Hammersmith borough, they may from time to time assist people from all parts of London. Most of the programmes they run are offered for free to those who qualify based on income.

A unit focuses on housing. It is run in partnership with groups such as the Legal Aid Agency. Various services are offered by the solicitors, including representation for tenants. They can get free advice on housing law and other assistance, as noted below. Another service is help in applying for rent schemes, which are often difficult to receive.

Representation can be handled for various matters, and advice is also available for tenants facing possession actions. There is also help for stopping evictions from a private accommodation, and suggestions on how to pay off rent arrears. Individuals may be able to access landlord/tenant mediation sessions and get help in applying for late rent payments or other deposit schemes.

There are many other housing problems that can be addressed. For example get help in dealing with a landlord who won’t repair your home. For those women facing domestic violence, Hammersmith and Lulham Law Centre can provide suggestions on where to turn to for help. There is of course information for families facing imminent eviction from their flat as well. Or learn how to appeal a denied application for a housing benefit or deposit. Call 020 3080 0330 for information on these programmes.

Individuals going to court may receive duty advice. This is available at the West London as well as Brentford County Court. This is for people that have not received any advice from a lawyer prior to their court date. In these cases, the solicitor from Hammersmith and Lulham Law Centre may be able to help them before the court session or hearing.

Hammersmith and Lulham Law Centre also offers free or low cost legal advice to refugees or immigrants. A dedicated team, including both case workers, volunteers, and a number of solicitors focus on providing assistance to them as needed. They offer support for domestic violence, housing of immigrants, employment, and more. It is available in partnership with the Legal Aid Agency.

Both lawyers, and legal students and the caseworkers at the charity are full members of the UK Law Society’s Immigration and Asylum Advice Scheme. They have extensive experience and work with the not-for-profit Legal Aid Agency on these cases. Some of the specific advice for immigrants or refugees is as follows. Most of the aid provided will have a fee or due from the client. So this aid will often come with a cost and is not free.
