With the goal of preventing homelessness in the High Peak Borough, the council offers different schemes to residents on a low income. One is the bond guarantee, and this will help the person pay the deposit that is due. Another option is the ongoing advice provided, which will also include assisting the family on a low income with applying for benefits.
These programmes are provided by the Homeless Prevention Officer at the High Peak Borough Council. This individual works as part of a team of specialists that administer the various government funded housing schemes. If someone is not eligible for the options noted above or below, then they can often signpost the applicant to other services.
This is often used by those families that can’t access social housing. There are limited number of government homes available, and they often fill up. In these cases the private rented sector is often used as a fall back. This allows people the ability to select different flats or accommodations. The properties will be owned by local landlords, who may advertise them in papers or other locations.
When selecting a unit from the the PRS in High Peak, most landlords ask for a security or damage deposit. The council scheme can help pay for this expense if the landlord needs it done. Or it can also cover a rent in advance that may be due.
The High Peak Borough rent deposit scheme assists people on a low income or benefits. There are many eligibility criteria to this. In addition, the Homeless Prevention Officer can help the client apply for Local Housing Allowance / Benefits which can be used for paying future rent costs.
As far as eligibility, it is offered for those who are homeless. Or if someone is behind on their rent and needs to move or is threatened with homelessness, then they can apply as well. There is also additional support in that the person will partner with a support worker to ensure that the individual can maintain their tenancy agreement over time.
Some of the other options include Sheltered Housing, which is for residents over the age of 55. This is for the homeless that are over that age threshhold. They can stay at the shelter in High Peak while they seek further help from the deposit scheme. The phone number is 01457 869925.
Also, free advice is given. The aim is to prevent future evictions. This is for people who are in the scheme or really anyone from the borough that just needs support. The fact is that homelessness is always preventable. As long as a tenant takes the proper steps to maintain their agreement, anything can be done.
Maybe someone just needs advice or is facing a short term crisis. No matter what, the Homelessness Prevention Team will go over all different resources. Whether it is financial aid or short term housing, there may be help. Ring 0845 129 8075 to make an appointment with the council.
