Anglesey emergency rental assistance options
If a tenant is having difficulty maintaining rent payments, there are local programmes that can help clients deal with rent difficulties. As is the case across all of the UK, the Isle of Anglesey must publish its homelessness prevention efforts and maintain the proper support for those facing no place to live.
It is true that housing benefit can make rent affordable. Each tenant not already receiving housing benefit can get help in filing the appropriate forms necessary in order to receive monthly aid.
Cash aid is not the main purpose of the various programmes that serve local residents though. Instead, free advice is utilised where possible to help with boosting the self-sufficiency of each household. Here are some of the support options that can help when a tenant is experiencing an emergency situation and cannot make the rent payment on-time.
Housing First Anglesey
Homeless individuals (age 25 and up) may be able to get help finding permanent housing by virtue of the Housing First Anglesey Project. This programme is operated by The Wallich, a registered charity that helps people in Anglesey and several other communities throughout Wales.
What the project does is to first help homeless adults find permanent housing. Support continues thereafter to ensure that each tenant is able to abide by the terms of the tenancy and pay the rent on time. Anyone who has no current housing and no place to go may call 01407 765274 to speak with a helpful representative.
Supporting People Programme
The local Supporting People Team provides direct assistance and advice to those who are homeless by definition. This can include anyone who is living with a friend, in a car or in a temporary residence.
This is an active service that can work with anyone living in Anglesey. In some situations, the programme will actually pay the service charges on a client’s behalf if they need to consult with a third party for assistance. Funding comes from the Welsh Government.
Anyone may contact the Anglesey Team at 01248 75 20 74.
Housing Support
The council can help any family experiencing a crisis with housing floating support. This free programme matches a Support Officer with each family who is dealing with a housing crisis. A crisis could include a loss of income or even problems with a landlord.
Anyone aged 16 and over can benefit from housing support. It is commonly sought by tenants in crisis or transition who need help either maintaining a residence or moving to a new apartment. The Housing Support Services telephone is 01248 752200.
Council Housing
If rent is unaffordable for a household, then an alternative is to take advantage of council housing. Rents are priced below market, and they can be paid through several different methods to accommodate a wide variety of situations.
Council housing is reserved for individuals and families that have a long-lasting and serious financial issue that undermines their ability to obtain or maintain private rental housing. Rates are set to be affordable, especially given the receipt of housing benefit.
The council can help with filing of housing benefit. Additionally, council tax benefit could further reduce the obligations of a household. The Council Finance Service can answer benefit questions at telephone 01248 752658.
Advice for Homeless
Any individual or family at risk of homelessness may get free advice from the council’s Homelessness Team. This is particularly helpful for tenants at risk of eviction, since the council may sometimes be able to provide the necessary support to intervene.
The goal is to help a tenant remain in their current residence as long as that residence is permanently affordable. Any tenant faced with eviction or possible homelessness may contact the Homelessness Team at 01248 751850.
