The Luton Salvation Army centre helps the vulnerable in the community. Some of what they offer, such as advice, can direct the family to a programme for their needs. Some of the Bedfordshire families that turn to the Salvation Army are able to receive direct financial aid from the charity for fuel costs or maybe a free parcel of food.
It is more likely that a resident of Luton can be given a parcel of food or low cost meal to feed them so they are not threatened with hunger. In some cases the charity may have grants to top up pre-paid fuel meters or offer rent deposit help, but this is not as common.
A cafe is open two days per week. The location us run by volunteers who serve food from 10 am to 1 pm on both Tuesday and Friday’s of each week. The aim is to provide the person with healthy food, but the meal served will depend on what was donated to the Salvation Army. Retailers such as Tesco and Aldi often contribute goods to the cafe.
Both the homeless and families living in poverty that are local to Bedfordshire can drop in. They may be given a full meal. Or if they do not need that much, then a drink may be served or some other hot meal that is smaller in quantity. There are also free Christmas meals served to families in Bedfordshire.
The Salvation Army in Luton food bank is used by many families that are on a low income. Clients may be without a job or they have had their benefits cut. Others just can’t afford to pay for their groceries each month.
For those residents of the area, they can be given a free parcel of food. The groceries passed out in the box will depend on what the store has available. Family may be given tea, cereal, tinned meats, milk, and more. The use of the food bank will take off some of the pressure that families face as they try to pay other bills or rent they have. Other financial aid is provided from time to time too. Applicants will need an appointment with the Luton Salvation Army. At this counselling session, which is offered at no cost and is in confidence, the specialist will assess what the client needs. If the Salvation Army has resources, they may offer a voucher for paying certain living expenses. Or the charity will help the family apply for emergency welfare schemes as a form of emergency assistance.
A debt counselling service is available at the charity. There are several programmes available for residents in the county, and all of the advice is both free and confidential. The main sessions are held on Wednesdays during the week, and appointments are needed.
The Salvation Army is part of UK Money Advice. The counsellors have many assistance programmes they can offer consumers that are behind on their bills support. The counselling service will address all types of debts, whether payday loans, car expenses, or other bills.
The free advice from the Salvation Army will also help the family improve their financial situation by offering budgeting classes. There are group workshops as well as individual sessions with Salvation Army specialists.
