Motability Scheme helps disabled with car leasing

Anyone currently receiving mobility allowance for their disability may take the stress and hassle out of transportation. By trading in those benefits through the Motability Scheme, a new car can be a reality.

How it works

Instead of trying to arrange transportation, disabled adults have the ability to trade that allowance for a three year commitment through the Motability Scheme. Through the scheme, a car may be leased for three years. Each lease carries a mileage allowance of 60,000 miles over the three year lease term.

The scheme handles repairs, insurance, windscreens, tyres and breakdown assistance. A driver can simply fill it with petrol and they are on their way.

There are a couple hundred models to choose from. Additional choices are available for those who pay an additional amount in advance. Every three years, the car can be traded up for a new one. Certain models that have been altered for wheelchair access may be replaced every five years.

Some eligible recipients of mobility allowance are unable to drive. No worries. Up to two drivers may be nominated as regular drivers on the account. This allows for family or caretakers to operate the car on behalf of disabled adults when they cannot drive themselves.

Who qualifies?

Those who are receiving a mobility allowance and have at least 12 months of benefits remaining can participate. This includes:

HRMC of DLA–Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Allowance (will be replaced by Personal Independence Payment)
WPMS–War Pensioners Mobility Supplement

While the scheme is a great fit for many adults who have trouble managing transportation on their own, there are restrictions. Some disabilities may require substantial retrofitting which could require that the client pay a portion of the cost. In addition to cars, the Motability Scheme can also assist with wheelchairs and scooters. The programme allows for disabled adults to be able to freely travel to medical appointments and jobs, though personal travel is also approved.
