NextDoor Project housing and deposit schemes

Housing assistance from the NextDoor Project is for individuals that are currently homeless or threatened with it. The London charity is committed to helping those who are vulnerable avoid an eviction or they can assist them with finding new accommodations. The project and its case workers provide eligible individuals with information on schemes, referrals to funds for paying rent, and other resources, as noted below.

Most of the support is for households that have been impacted due to welfare reform. With the latest changes, even more families and individuals are falling behind on their housing payments. Too many tenants across London owe their landlords excessive rent on their flat, and they may be in arrears as well.

So the NextDoor Project was created in an effort to support those tenants that are now struggling. They can help people that have been impacted by a reduction in their housing benefits. There also support non-priority homeless people or individuals impacted by the Bedroom Tax. Some of the services they provide are below.

Anyone from the community or city of London can pick up information packs. They will give an overview of the cuts to benefits and the social welfare programmes. They also organize training sessions and workshops for interest individuals, so that is other source of information.

Households can receive free advice from case workers. There is information for tenants with paying off rent arrears. Or the homeless can learn about private or charity schemes for paying their deposit on a new home.

Westminster area residents can access special support as well. A caseworker is dedicated to that region, and can provide information to families from there.

The NextDoor Project Private Rented Sector Access Scheme is supported by many landlord and owners of affordable accommodations. The financial aid can be used to help clients move into a new flat, including the formerly homeless. This will resettle them and end a cycle of homelessness.

London based landlords may benefit as well by participating in this programme. The Private Rented Sector Access Deposit Scheme will almost guarantee them good tenants that will pay their housing costs and rent on time. There is reduced risk for using the service.

Free advice and case work from NextDoor is also offered. This service provides tenants with ongoing support on their legal rights. They can benefit from other services too, such as debt help, counselling, and other forms of guidance. Tenants can learn about their rights and also what landlords need to do as well.

An extensive number of recommendations are available from NextDoor Project to those who had their housing benefit cut. For example, it is recommended that tenants let their council know right away. They need to communicate that they may not be able to pay their rent on time in the future.

Another option, which the project may be able to help with, is to negotiate with your landlord. Explain the cuts to your government benefits, and see if they can come up with a payment plan or some other solution. After all, they don’t want to go through the expense and time of finding a new tenant.

Staff from the NextDoor Project can also help people apply for rental assistance from the Discretionary Housing Payment. Your council can arrange this as well, and it provides the person time to find new, affordable accommodations. In some cases, the council will offer you funds or a grant to pay the deposit on a new home.

Individuals can also explore the use of temporary, emergency accommodation. This is available across the city. Some London boroughs, and local churches in them, may offer that for those tenants facing eviction or that have been impacted by a benefit cut. The NextDoor Project can help people locate this centres.

Also, those that are most vulnerable to an eviction, such as children or pregnant individuals, are always recommended to call their council right away. They will have priority access to different schemes for their rent, if there are any available. Councils want to assist these individuals as much as possible.
