North Norfolk rent assistance schemes stop homelessness

Lower income residents of North Norfolk might otherwise succumb to the increasingly unaffordable average rent if it were not for the generous aid programmes in place. Each scheme serves a segment of the population that is at risk of homelessness or is already without a place to call home.

North Norfolk District Council

The Your Choice Your Home housing allocation scheme is the primary tool utilised by Council to link those without suitable housing to available vacancies. An Exception Housing Scheme applies for those enrolled on one of three housing registers to move up on the waitlist in certain circumstances.

Within the scheme, opportunities are available for alternative renting arrangements. These can include shared ownership and other strategies.

The Housing Options Team is committed to discussing these schemes as well as other forms of rental support. Advice is available through appointments as well as a drop in basis. Residents of North Norfolk may call 01263 516375 to speak with a Housing Options Team member who will be able to screen for rental aid and make necessary referrals.

The Benjamin Foundation

One local organisation is committed to helping young people escape unaffordable rent and homelessness. The Benjamin Foundation supports programmes across North Norfolk district that serves young adults with rent problems.

  • Steven Newing House: The Steven Newing House in Fakenham provides rent relief to homeless youth up to age 25. This facility is administered by The Benjamin Foundation and receives support from Council and Flagship Housing Association. This is more than just an emergency housing programme. This comprehensive support programme actually conditions youth for a life on their own. As a transitional housing scheme, residents are provided with ongoing support to help them earn a living wage, save for a rent deposit and get help moving into their own permanent apartment. Tenancy Support is provided to graduates to ensure they have every opportunity to remain independent. Enquiries may be directed to 01328 855181.
  • Winston Court: Single homeless persons can get help with a homeless situation by moving into one of the flats or single bedrooms of Winston Court. A Support Worker provides direction to those who have struggled to pay normal living costs. Young single adults may enquire about residency in this North Walsham facility by calling 01692 405405.
