Peterborough City deposit assistance scheme

Families seeking a home in the private sector can receive both financial help and other support from the Peterborough City Council. The Housing Needs Officer from the office will provide individuals everything from a scheme for paying the rent deposit to advice in dealing with landlords. The authorities also partner with property owners across Peterborough in an effort to stop homelessness.

Any type of deposit assistance is not guaranteed. The office will assess each application and make a decision based on merit. There is not an appeal process in the city of Peterborough. However if someone is not eligible for the scheme they can still receive other advice for free or be signposted to additional government or charity programmmes.

Types of deposit help in Peterborough City

Any assistance is for properties in the private rented sector only. This programme does not cover social housing, which has its own application process in place.

The housing team partners with landlords in the city. They will notify the authorities which homes or flats they have available that can be rented to families that are local and on a low income. This cooperation helps both the landlord increase their income and it also makes more properties available for residents on a low income.

The Peterborough City Housing Needs Officer will make sure that the property is safe and affordable. If there is a lack of properties to select from, or if the costs are too high, the the council can even contact the property owner to negotiate some type of arrangement to housing expenses.

All housing costs will be addressed by this negotiation process. The team will discuss deposit costs, administration charges, and even any rent in advance that is requested by the landlord. The aim is to try to ensure the home is affordable over the long term so that the tenancy agreement can be sustained.

The financial aid in Peterborough City is part of the rent deposit scheme. There is a formal application process in place and any funds or bond guarantees or issued at the discretion of the authorities.

The assistance will tend to be for the low income that are on benefits are that are eligible for them. This can include Job seekers allowance, Universal Credit, or other DWP programmes. Also, all applicants need to be over the age of 18 as well as local to the city. Another requirement is that a tenancy agreement can’t be entered into with a landlord until the housing team has inspected the property for safety and affordability.

The application for deposit help will require that an interview is done. The Housing Needs Officer will also require proof of income and savings that the prospective tenant has. Those seeking assistance can’t have a past history of being evicted because of being in rent arrears. Only if the applicant meets all of the terms set by the council will any type of deposit help be provided.

Other advice is provided by the council. This is for any resident of the city. People can be referred to everything from Tenancy deposit protection to how to deal with rent arrears on private homes.
