Rent and deposit assistance from schemes in Suffolk

Schemes from the council and organisations local to Suffolk can help with the deposit payment for a private sector accommodation. The groups also work with charities to provide temporary accommodations to the homeless while they gain stability and apply for these local schemes. The aim of the council, in partnership with the charities and other housing agencies, is to prevent homelessness and resettle people that need it into a more affordable home.

Suffolk organisations that help with rent deposits

The Suffolk Coastal District Council provides a combination of loans and guarantees to eligible tenants for their deposit payments. In addition, the team at the centre also partners with the charities below to provide temporary accommodations to families or individuals that are currently homeless.

Landlords often require a security deposit from the tenant in order to let to them, as the reason this is done is to pay for any future damage or any arrears that may occur on the property. So the landlord of the private housing unit is protecting their property, as they should be doing. The rent deposit guarantee scheme from the council can help individuals come up with this money that needs to be paid, and it is for single people as well as families with children that have a local connection to Suffolk.

While the funding can run out and the council provides the assistance at its own discretion, when eligible the person may receive up to one month worth of rent help from the scheme. This will often be enough for the landlord to start the tenancy agreement.

If at the end of the tenancy, if there is damage to the home, then the landlord can file a claim wit the council. In this case, the tenant will need to repay the funds, and the assistance becomes a loan. So the individual needs to follow all conditions in place from the council.

In some cases due to limited funding, the Suffolk Council will also decide to issue a loan as a deposit payment that needs to be repaid over 12 months. This will be provided to people that may not be eligible for any other forms of assistance, and it can reduce the council’s risk of providing funds to an individual.

There are many criteria that need to be met from applicants, and they need to be on a low income. The applicant also can’t access social housing however they need to be eligible for Housing Benefit. The individual must also have explored all other programmes first, such as charities, and the rent deposit scheme from the council is a last resort.

Another priority is on the homeless in Suffolk, or those people that are threatened with it. Also, if the applicant has a past history of homelessness or damaging properties, the council may deny the application. Or they will issue a loan in lieu of this. If the person breached any other agreements in past, then they will not qualify.

The council office is at Melton Hill, Woodbridge, Suffolk. The telephone number is 01394 383789. The housing team can also provide other advice to individuals with a local connection. Learn more on Suffolk Coastal District Council deposit schemes.
