Support services from Maggs Day Centre in Worcestershire

Assistance from Maggs Day Centre is for individuals on a low income as well as the homeless in the Worcestershire County region. The organisation runs three main services for clients, and they include the Clothing Project, an Activity Centre is available, and a Day Centre on site provides support. Each offers different types of help to the needy, with an aim on addressing basic needs such as food, shelter, form completing to benefits such as welfare, and crisis support.

Free clothing is for the homeless and those in poverty. Items are donated from the community, and volunteers from Magg’s will provide the goods as well as start packs to people living in poverty or sleeping rough. The hours of clothing distribution are Monday and Thursday from 9am to 12pm.

The items provided to eligible clients will vary based on donation levels. The starter packs may have towels, bedding, and free small kitchen appliances and can be used by prospective tenants for a new home. Clothing can be coats for the winter, fee boots, mittens, or work items. Hundreds of people are assisted each month, if they have a referral from YMCA, CAB/WHABAC, St Pauls Hostel, or the council.

The Day Centre is a place where people can go for free advice and support. Volunteers that are at the centre are welcoming to clients, whether they are homeless or just struggling. The programmes at the Magg’s Day Centre are extensive, and some are as follows.

Volunteers can help clients apply for welfare and other benefits, whether they are council schemes for rent deposits or food assistance. Referrals and signposting is to local charities for substance abuse issues or medical care. There is also guidance from Day Centre Staff on finding a home or shelter to live in or help in locating a job, and vouchers can be given to local charity food banks.

Clients can get guidance on form filling, and staff advocate on behalf of families in poverty to ensure they get the benefits they are due. Staff from the centre also assist to enhance emotion well-being of clients and anyone that is struggling from the county, and they work to find solutions to the challenges being faced. One benefit for the resident in a crisis is government aid, and read more local welfare schemes.

Other basic needs are addressed at the Day Centre too. Those who drop in will also be given a free hot meal as well as a drink or other food items. There can be showers to use as well as a warm blanket for the homeless. There are even dentists that are on site from time to time to provide care to the homeless. So many services will be provided to those in poverty.

People at risk of homelessness can use the assistance provided by the St Albans Annexe. Clients will need to have referrals from CAB or a local charity to obtain help from the Annexe, and the aim is to help people regain their housing independence.

Some of the main clients are substance mis-users, the mentally ill, and people escaping from domestic violence in Worcestershire. Staff from Maggs Day Centre will partner with these individuals in an effort to help them get the skills they need to live independently and address the root cause of their housing problems.

There are training classes held for everything from IT skills to reading, math, and even cooking. There may be classes held with other organisations in Worcestershire, such as LEA, and these also focus on education and other support services. Many people are able to land employment in the county as a result of these training services.
