Wonga to help victims of scams

Many families on a low income that have been seeking a loan have been scammed by people claiming they were working for Wonga. This has been brought to the attention of regulators as well as the company, and they have established a new fraud hot-line for victims to call. The number is 086 196 6424 or people can call the customer care number at 0800 316 6745 to both report this communications and to look for a solution.

There have been scores of people that have stated they were contacted by representatives who claimed they were from Wonga. They use emails to initiate this type of communication. Some of the fraudsters are even contacting potential borrowers using SMSes.

The messages are trying trying to get personal information from the person that was contacted, and that of course can lead to identify theft or other issues. Some of the messages are even requesting the consumer pay advance fees for a loan, which Wonga would never ask for.

The requests for information are not coming from Wonga. Instead it turned out that they were really from other high priced lenders or even loan shark type companies. However Wonga will work with the impacted customer to try to clear their name and restore credit if if has been impacted.

Solutions that are being taken

There is a dedicated fraud hot line set up by the company for victims of this scam to call. Not only that, but consumers have other options as well. In the UK, people can always report it to their bank or contact the Financial Ombudsman Service. These different approaches may be able to help the consumer fix any identify theft issues. Or if there credit has impacted, the bank may be able to fix it.

In the future, everyone should also know that Wonga will never send out unsolicited messages or emails. They will never request any type of fees upfront, and this is required by the FCA and other regulations in place. So never provide this information or pay anyone if they claim to work for Wonga, as chances are it is a scam.

Wonga will also do everything they can across their company to help victims. They will provide affidavits if need be so that the victim of the scam can clear their name. Other documentation will also be send to a bank or credit bureaux if needed as well to clear the customer name. So there are different solutions for these victims of scam.

Anyone that has been contacted by any potential fraudsters should call the company at 0800 316 6745. The customer service team can provide more information.
